Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU), School of Architecture
Year 2: Spring 2010
INTRODUCTION
The summer house of a family of four in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The house is split up into two buildings with a covered connection where one is private and the second is public. The private building contains the bedrooms and full bathrooms plus storage and the public building contains the kitchen, living room, and guest half bathroom. The complex was lowered into the ground to provide protection from the environment and the house’s circular design simulate and complement the natural shape of two bays.
The private building is located in between the two bays where it will have thermal mass to help with the climate in addition to an unobstructed view of the ocean. The public building is placed in front of the larger circle with a view of the ocean and an L shaped pool around it. The open outdoor spaces within the two bay circles are protected from winds and public views.
